One thing many people do not realize is that with Combat PTSD it is not uncommon for the soldier to become extremely cold and distant. In doing so, he or she keeps everything bottled up and then turns to drinks or some drug in order to ease the stress, pain, and anxiety that comes from holding all of that in. It is a sad cause and effect.
